Kholoud Al-Alawi is a prominent Omani journalist and broadcaster, known for hosting the radio programme “All Questions” on Hala FM. On 01 December 2021, the Omani Ministry of Information suspended the broadcast of her programme without providing a written explanation, informing the station by phone. This action followed an interview aired the same day with Shura Council member Dr. Mohammed Al-Zadjali, during which he criticised the Council’s leadership and remarked that “the media outlets handed over their necks to the Ministry of Information”. The suspension was widely perceived as an arbitrary measure threatening freedom of expression, leading to the hashtag #Solidarity_with_Kholoud_Al-Alawi trending on Omani Twitter. Subsequently, on 23 December 2021, the Ministry issued a circular requiring media outlets to coordinate with it before hosting Shura Council members, a move seen by observers as further restricting media freedom.
