Lodya Remon Albarti

Lodya Remon Albarti is an Iraqi Christian human rights defender and environmental activist. Albarti began her human rights work in 2017 as a volunteer with the Iraqi Al-Firdaws Association and later became an employee responsible for monitoring and evaluation. Albarti has served as the Basra coordinator for the Iraqi Social Forum and leads the Euphrates Protection Team, which focuses on environmental pollution and water conservation. Since 2019, Albarti has worked with the Italian NGO “Bridge to” on non-violence and conflict resolution. In 2018, Albarti also co-led a feminist protest during mass demonstrations in Basra. On 17 August 2020, Albarti was injured in an assassination attempt when unidentified gunmen opened fire on her car. Albarti was shot in the leg and transferred to Basra Teaching Hospital, where she received treatment and was later discharged in good health.
