Mahmoud Hamad Thani Al-Rawahy

Mahmoud Hamad Thani Al-Rawahy is an Omani poet and human rights defender who has been involved in advocacy for political reforms and freedom of expression in Oman. He was arrested in June 2012 during pro-reform protests, which followed strikes at petroleum plants over pay and pension issues. Al-Rawahy, along with other activists, was accused of insulting Sultan Qaboos and violating information technology laws through posts on social media. He was also charged with illegal assembly for participating in peaceful demonstrations. On 9 July 2012, Al-Rawahy was sentenced to one year in prison and granted bail of 100 Omani Rials (approximately $260) pending the outcome of his appeal.
