Moatman Suhair Al-Askari

Moatman Suhair Al-Askari was a 21-year-old civil society activist living in Iraq. On 8 April 2024, he was assassinated by unknown gunmen riding a motorcycle outside his home in the Suq Al-Shuyukh district of Dhi Qar Governorate. Al-Askari had actively participated in the October 2019 protests, and had previously been injured in the Al-Zaytoun Bridge massacre near Al-Haboubi Square in the city of Nasiriyah. On 19 April 2024, authorities confirmed the arrest of the suspected perpetrator of his assassination, and claimed it was carried out for personal reasons. However, his father claimed in a video published online that his assassination was targeted, rather than personal, as he was not involved in any personal conflicts that could have led to the act.
