Mohammed Al-Bajadi
Mohammed Saleh Al-Bajadi is a Saudi human rights defender and co-founder of the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association (ACPRA), an organisation advocating for political reform and the protection of civil liberties in Saudi Arabia. Al-Bajadi has been subjected to multiple arrests and detentions due to his peaceful activism. In 2007, Al-Bajadi was detained in solitary confinement without charge for four months after informing international media about a sit-in calling for the release of political prisoners. On 21 March 2011, Al-Bajadi was arrested by the Ministry of Interior’s Bureau of Investigation and Prosecution after participating in a protest in Riyadh. In April 2012, the Specialised Criminal Court sentenced Al-Bajadi to four years in prison on charges related to his activism, including “insurrection against the ruler” and “communicating with foreign media.”
Al-Bajadi was released in 2015 but was re-arrested on 24 May 2018 during a crackdown on women’s rights defenders. He was subsequently sentenced to an egregious 10-year prison term, with five years suspended, which expired in April 2023. He remains in Buraydah Prison, where he has been denied access to legal representation. He has also experienced torture and other ill-treatment, including physical abuse and prolonged incommunicado detention.
More than two years after the end of his sentence, while being denied his right to legal representation, he was subjected to a retrial and accordingly, on 27 October 2025, sentenced to a further 25 years in prison.
