Mohammed Al-Qarini

Mohammed Al-Qarini is an Omani protester from the province of Saham who was arrested for participating in peaceful demonstrations calling for economic reforms, job opportunities and the eradication of corruption, and whose detention and subsequent release illustrate wider restrictions on fundamental freedoms including freedom of assembly and expression in Oman. Al-Qarini, then aged 23, joined the popular protests that began in Sohar on 23 May 2021 and spread to other provinces, where mostly young people gathered to express socio-economic grievances and demand governmental accountability. These protests were described as peaceful but nonetheless met with detentions by security forces. On or about 30 May 2021, the Royal Oman Police arrested Al-Qarini alongside other protest participants including Abdullah Salem Obaid Al-Badi, Abdullah Salem Abdullah Al-Badi and Nahyan Al-Badi on a range of charges commonly used against peaceful demonstrators such as participating in a gathering of more than ten people without a permit, violating Covid-19 precautionary measures and other public order-related offences. He was detained for several weeks before being permitted to secure his release on bail on 12 June 2021, and most of the more serious charges were subsequently dropped, with only lesser public order-related charges retained. There are no credible reports of further prolonged detention following his release.
