Mohammed Ayish
Mohammed Ayish, a Yemeni human rights defender and Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper The First/Al-Oulah, faces judicial harassment linked directly to his legitimate work exposing corruption. On 3 April 2013, a writ was issued by the Press and Publication Prosecutor against him and fellow activist Mohammed Al-Abbsi, following a complaint by the Reform Charity Association chaired by the Minister of Justice, Judge Murshed Al-Arshani, alleging that their investigative reports had insulted the Association and damaged its reputation. The trial unfolded in Sana’a before the Press Court of First Instance, which postponed hearings to allow the defence to access case files On 29 April 2013, the defence submitted a detailed petition challenging the complaint’s legitimacy. The Association is seeking around 100 million Yemeni rials in compensation. The Gulf Centre for Human Rights condemns these proceedings as a politically motivated attempt to stifle freedom of expression and undermines the defenders’ peaceful and lawful efforts to document corruption, calling on Yemeni authorities to drop all charges and guarantee the safety and rights of Ayish, Al-Abbsi, and other journalists and human rights defenders to operate without fear of reprisals.
