Mohammed Na’na Hassan is an Iraqi political analyst. On 30 August 2022, Hassan made critical comments towards Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, before he assumed office, on an episode of “The Decision is for You” programme presented by journalist Sahar Abbas Jameel from the Dijlah Satellite Channel. In retaliation, Prime Minister Al-Sudani accused him of verbally attacking him, leading to Hassan’s arrest on 26 March 2023. He was released 12 days later on bail. In a sham trial where neither Hassan nor his lawyer were allowed to present their defence, Hassan was convicted on charges of defamation and insulting the Prime Minister. He successfully appealed the sentence, and the trials continued. He was re-arrested on 14 January 2024, by an armed group wearing civilian clothes affiliated with the National Security Service. However, in response to a major solidarity campaign launched by civil society organisations and Hassan’s fellow journalists, he was released, and the charges dropped.
