Mohammed Qaid Al-Azizi

Mohammed Qaid Al-Azizi is a Yemeni journalist from Sana’a who has worked for more than two decades covering public affairs and social issues and whose violent assault in June 2021 illustrates the severe risks faced by journalists and civic actors in Yemen. On 27 June 2021, Mohammed Qaid Al-Azizi was attacked outside his apartment by a group of six individuals in the presence of his children, an assault reportedly linked to a dispute with the landlord of the property who was attempting to evict him in order to re-rent the accommodation. The attack left Mohammed Qaid Al-Azizi seriously injured and required his admission to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Sana’a, where he later reported that his condition had stabilised. Following the assault, Mohammed Qaid Al-Azizi attempted to file a complaint at the September 26 Police Station, but police officers reportedly refused to register it without the presence of two witnesses, reflecting institutional obstacles to accountability for violence against journalists. The Public Prosecution’s Office in the northern part of the capital later issued an order for the arrest of the alleged attackers, although there is no publicly available information confirming whether this order was enforced or whether the perpetrators were ultimately held accountable. After recovering from his injuries, Mohammed Qaid Al-Azizi continued his civic engagement and announced, alongside colleagues, the creation of a preparatory committee to establish an association aimed at defending tenants’ rights and addressing abuses faced by renters.
