Mojgan Keshavarz

Mojgan Keshavarz is an Iranian women’s rights defender who was arrested on 25 April 2019 after distributing flowers to women in the Tehran metro on International Women’s Day as part of a campaign against the compulsory hijab. She was transferred shortly thereafter to the Qarchak Prison in Varamin. In July 2019, the Revolutionary Court Branch 28 in Tehran sentenced her to a combined prison term of up to 10 years based on charges including “assembly and collusion against national security”, “propaganda against the state”, and “encouraging corruption and prostitution”, and an additional seven to seven and a half years for “insulting sanctities”, but only the longest sentence is applied under Iranian law  (effectively ten years in prison). While in Qarchak she has publicly denounced degrading treatment including forced full nudity for photographs to check for concealed items, being compelled to spread her legs and sit with legs open, and invasive body searches conducted to intimidate and humiliate detainees. Her case has drawn condemnation internationally from human rights organisations, UN experts and others due to the harsh treatment and violation of her rights.
