Mukhtar Al-Hinai is an Omani journalist and human rights defender who has been subjected to judicial harassment by the Omani authorities in retaliation for his reporting on a corruption case involving government officials. On 9 March 2022, he tweeted about a Muscat court ruling convicting eight defendants of embezzlement and forgery. In response, he was summoned by the Public Prosecution Department in Muscat on 15 March 2022, investigated for two hours, and informed that he had been referred for trial under Article 249 of the Omani Penal Code, which prohibits the publication of court rulings under embargo.
