Murtadha Al-Janoubi
Murtadha Al-Janoubi is an Iraqi environmental activist who has been targeted by the authorities for his peaceful advocacy in defence of water rights and the preservation of the Iraqi Marshes in a context of restrictions on freedom of assembly and expression in Iraq. Murtadha Al-Janoubi has been actively involved in organising demonstrations calling for sufficient and equitable water allocations for the Marshes and uses his social media platforms to advocate for the right of local communities to a dignified life and for the protection of this unique ecosystem. On 04 March 2026, he was arrested in the Al-Musharrah district of Al-Kahla in Maysan Governorate during demonstrations he helped organise. He was detained alongside other protesters and released later the same day. His activism is closely linked to the preservation of the Marshes, which were inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 2016 as a site of outstanding natural and cultural value.
