Nabil Chennoufi
Nabil Chennoufi is a Tunisian engineer specialised in food processing and agricultural systems, as well as a long-standing civil society activist and human rights defender. He is known for combining scientific and technical expertise with sustained engagement in volunteer work, youth development and humanitarian initiatives. From an early age, Chennoufi has been involved in civic and educational activities, including leadership roles in the scouting movement in Bab Souika, where he served as a troop leader and organiser of regional scouting events in Tunis. He also founded and manages educational clubs for children focused on chess, history and science, and has organised environmental awareness campaigns and community-based initiatives aimed at youth empowerment and civic education. Alongside his social and educational work, Nabil Chennoufi is a long-time activist and staunch defender of Palestinian rights. He has organised and participated in numerous mobilisations in Tunisia both before and after 07 October 2023, advocating for Palestinian self-determination and against the blockade of Gaza. He played a central role in launching the Sumud Convoy aimed at breaking the siege on Gaza and was also an organiser of the Sumud Flotilla initiative in 2025. He serves on the steering committees of both the Maghreb and Global Sumud Flotillas, reflecting his prominent role in transnational solidarity networks. On 07 March 2026, he was arrested alongside other members of the initiative, including Wael Naouar, Jawaher Channa, and Dr. Mohamed Amine Bennour, during a broader security operation targeting meetings and organisational activities linked to the flotilla. Authorities subsequently opened an investigation into alleged financial irregularities, including accusations related to fundraising practices and possible money laundering linked to the initiative’s support networks. Human rights organisations and civil society actors have described the case as part of a wider pattern of criminalisation of peaceful activism and solidarity work in Tunisia, particularly regarding Palestine-related initiatives. Reports indicate that Nabil Chennoufi was placed in pretrial detention pending further judicial proceedings following his arrest.
