Nazila Maroofian

Nazila Maroufian is a Kurdish Iranian journalist from Saqqez who rose to prominence after publishing an interview on 14 October 2022 with Amjad Amini, the father of Mahsa Jina Amini, whose death in custody sparked nationwide protests. Following the interview, she received threats from the Iranian authorities and was arrested on 30 October 2022 and subsequently detained in Tehran’s Evin Prison. On 28 January 2023, Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced her to two years in prison, a fine of 15 million tomans and a five-year travel ban on charges of “spreading propaganda against the regime” and “spreading false information”. After being released on bail, Maroufian was arrested several times in 2023, including on 08 July for defying Iran’s compulsory hijab laws and again on 24 August for supporting musician Mehdi Yarrahi. During her detention, she reported being sexually assaulted and harassed by security forces, prompting her to go on hunger strike in protest. Facing continued persecution, she eventually fled Iran and sought refuge in France, where she continues to campaign for women’s rights and freedom of expression.
