Noof Al-Maadeed
Noof Al-Maadeed is a woman human rights defender from Qatar. After facing severe domestic violence from her family, she escaped from Qatar to the United Kingdom, where she applied for political asylum. She shared her story with the world through interviews on both television and podcasts. She became an advocate for Qatari women’s rights, shedding light on the detrimental impact that the country’s male guardianship law has on women, who are disallowed from travelling, securing a government job, or obtaining a loan for independent housing without the approval of a male guardian. In 2021, she returned to Qatar, having received promises from Qatari authorities that she would be protected and her rights respected. However, she later reported receiving threats to her life, and even assassination attempts from her family. She went missing for three months on 13 October 2021, and was not heard from until she confirmed her safety on 9 January 2022. On 18 March 2023, she posted a series of videos detailing the human rights violations she had been facing, including travel bans and blackmail. She has not been heard from publicly since, but in mid-2024, GCHR heard that is alive but banned from talking to the media or expressing her views on social media networks.
