Nour Al-Shilo
Nour Al-Shilo is a Syrian civil society activist and journalist born in 1992 in Atareb in the western countryside of Aleppo, widowed mother of three and family breadwinner. She was arrested on 15 September 2020 by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and held incommunicado for over two months under absurd charges while her work had focused on humanitarian and women’s rights via local media outlets and rights organisations in Aleppo and Idlib. During her detention she faced a possible death sentence amid international outcry and petitions calling for her freedom, and afterwards was released on 04 January 2021, to widespread relief among advocacy groups including the Gulf Centre for Human Rights, which had formally expressed grave concern over her fate.
