Omar Mama Kurda is a political activist and member of the New Generation Movement’s High Council from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. On 19 March 2024, he was arrested by security forces after announcing his intention to hold a press conference to discuss the political situation in the region. Prior to his arrest, Mama Kurda had been involved in organising protests and public demonstrations advocating for political reforms and greater transparency in the Kurdistan Regional Government. His activism has made him a target of the authorities, who have used various means to suppress dissent, including arbitrary detentions and intimidation. Despite the challenges and threats he faces, Mama Kurda continues to be an active voice in the New Generation Movement, advocating for democratic reforms and the protection of human rights in the Kurdistan Region.
