Omar Tiba
Omar Tiba was a Lebanese citizen who was killed by security forces during the protests that have been held in the city of Tripoli since the night of 25 January 2021. These protests erupted in response to the Lebanese government’s decision to extend Covid-19 lockdown measures until 8 February 2021, amid worsening economic conditions. Security forces employed excessive violence, including live ammunition, rubber bullets, tear gas, and water cannons, to prevent protesters from entering the government palace of the Northern Governorate. 220 demonstrators were wounded and Tiba was killed alongside Oussama Ghemrawi. This event became emblematic of the risks faced by Lebanese civilians exercising their right to protest and highlighted concerns about the use of lethal force and broader repression of civil dissent.
