Osama Al-Kurbash
Osama Al-Kurbash is a Yemeni journalist from Taiz Governorate whose detention while carrying out his journalistic work reflects the serious threats and restrictions on press freedom and freedom of expression in Yemen’s ongoing conflict. According to rights monitoring reported by the Gulf Centre for Human Rights, Osama Al-Kurbash was detained in Taiz Governorate while performing his duties as a journalist, part of a broader pattern of harassment, arbitrary detention and intimidation deployed against media professionals by various parties to the conflict including the Houthis, the Southern Transitional Council and other armed actors. His detention was highlighted alongside other cases of journalists arbitrarily held or targeted during 2025, illustrating the expanding use of detention and other punitive measures to curtail independent reporting and suppress critical voices in Yemen’s volatile media environment. The targeting of Osama Al-Kurbash occurred in a context where checkpoints and security apparatuses have been used to intimidate journalists during their movements and where civil society advocates have reported widespread abuses against media workers without effective accountability mechanisms.
