Rachad Temboura

Rachad Temboura is a Tunisian graffiti artist and human rights defender who was sentenced on 31 January 2025 by the Court of Appeal to two years imprisonment after being found guilty of multiple charges including “spreading false information aimed at harming public security” under Article 24 of Decree‑Law No. 54. His case stemmed from a mural he created criticising the government’s racism against sub-Saharan African migrants. He was released on 17 July 2025 upon completing his sentence. The proceedings against Temboura illustrate the shrinking space for dissent and artistic expression in Tunisia, where laws such as Decree-Law No. 54 are used to punish critics of state policy rather than genuine threats to public order.
