Radhya Al-Mutawakel
Radhya Al-Mutawakel, a Yemeni human rights defender, historian with a Masters in Political Science (2006), and co-founder of Mwatana for Human Rights in 2007, of which she is Chairperson, has persistently campaigned for accountability regarding violations by all parties in Yemen. On 18 June 2018, she and the Executive Director, Abdulrasheed Al-Faqih, were detained for around 12 hours by Saudi-UAE-led coalition forces at Seiyun Airport as they prepared to travel for human rights advocacy, during which their passports and belongings were confiscated before their release later that night. On 30 September 2023, the Houthis again prevented her, Al-Faqih and three Mwatana colleagues from travelling via Sanaa International Airport, summoning them individually, cancelling departure documents and returning their luggage (all without legal justification). In the same vein, on 14 June 2018 Al-Faqih was detained at a checkpoint in Marib, and on 4 March 2016 he was interrogated at Sanaa Airport upon returning from Amman, during which his passport was confiscated. Beyond these incidents, Al-Mutawakel made history in 2017 as the first Yemeni woman to brief the UN Security Council, pressuring for an international inquiry into war crimes in Yemen. Despite record levels of harassment (detentions, travel bans, threats, smear campaigns) she remains unwavering in advocating for victims of conflict and documenting abuses across 18 governorates.
