Raheleh Ahmadi

Raheleh Ahmadi is an Iranian women’s rights defender and mother of activist Saba Kord Afshari who participated in the White Wednesdays campaign by removing her hijab in public alongside her daughter. She was arrested at her home on 10 July 2019 apparently to pressure Saba into making a state‑broadcast “confession” denouncing the campaign. She was transferred to IRGC‑controlled Ward 2A in Evin Prison then to Qarchak prison on 12 July 2019 and released on bail a few days later pending trial. On 16 December 2019, Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court sentenced her to a total of four years and two months in prison on charges of “assembly and collusion to act against national security” and “propaganda against the system”, although she was acquitted of “encouraging immorality or prostitution”. Her sentence was later reduced to two years and seven months. She began serving her sentence in Evin Prison in February 2020, endured serious health issues including a low‑functioning thyroid, nervous breakdown, mobility loss and COVID‑19 infection. She was repeatedly denied adequate medical care, legal counsel access was restricted, and a new criminal case was opened against her in November 2021 for alleged propaganda conducted while detained. She was released in October 2022, and with Saba her detention was declared a violation of international law by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention in May 2023.
