Ruqaiya Ahmed Al-Sawadi
Ruqaiya Ahmed Al-Sawadi, a Yemeni woman convicted alongside actress and model Intisar Al-Hammadi and two other colleagues, was prosecuted before the West Capital Municipality Court of First Instance in Sanaa, headed by Judge Osama Abdulaziz Al-Junaid, in a case marked by blatant violations of fair-trial standards. On 08 November 2021, she was sentenced to a one-year suspended prison term on charges including alleged adultery, while her colleagues received harsher penalties : Al-Hammadi and Yousra Ahmed Al-Nashiri were each sentenced to five years, and Mahaliah Abdulwahab Al-Baadani to three years. The verdict was issued personally by Judge Al-Junaid without providing the defence team with the case file or a written judgment for court records, thereby denying them the ability to mount a proper defence. GCHR and other human rights organisations strongly denounced the trial as politically motivated and based on trumped-up charges, calling for the immediate and unconditional release of the women and for the Houthis to respect the rights of women to live and work freely without harassment and prejudice. As of 2025, there is no evidence that Al-Sawadi has been subjected to renewed detention, as her sentence was suspended.
