Saeed Salem Al-Mashani
Saeed Salem Al-Mashani is an Omani citizen from the Dhofar Governorate who has been subjected to judicial harassment due to his exercise of religious freedom. On 24 June 2024, he was arrested for a post published on the social media platform X, in which he expressed support for performing Eid Al-Adha prayers according to the Mecca calendar (in contrast with the official announcement made by the Omani government). He was charged with inciting sectarian strife and promoting division among residents. Subsequent to this, on 20 August 2024, the Salalah Court of Appeal handed down a sentence of two years’ imprisonment, although it was acknowledged that the individual had already served the requisite period. Furthermore, he was ordered to pay the court costs incurred. This case exemplifies a broader pattern of targeting individuals from the Al-Mashani tribe for their religious beliefs, thereby raising significant concerns regarding violations of freedom of religion and belief in Oman.
