Saeed Sultan Al-Hashemi
Saed Sultan Al-Hashemi is a human rights defender and activist in Oman who has been actively involved in advocating for freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and democratic reforms. On 17 March 2013, the Court of Appeal in Muscat ordered the release on bail of several human rights defenders convicted on charges relating to assembly. Al-Hashemi was among those released on bail, along with Basma Al-Kiyumi, Basema Al-Rajehi, Bader Al-Jaberi, Abdullah Al-Ghailani, Nasser Al-Ghailani, Khalid Al-Nawfali, and Mohammed Al-Fazari. The bail was set at 200 OMR (around 520 dollars). This release followed a High Court ruling on 4 March 2013 that abolished certain provisions and sentences related to assembly charges and sent the cases back to the Court of Appeal to be heard by a different composition of judges.
Al-Hashemi had previously been detained following peaceful protests in Muscat on 11 June 2012. Alongside other detainees, he faced charges including defaming the Sultan, violating cyber laws, unlawful assembly, and disturbing public order. In protest of delays in processing their appeals at the High Court and of ill-treatment in prison, Al-Hashemi, together with Basma Al-Kiyumi, Basema Al-Rajehi, and 14 other detainees, carried out a hunger strike on 9 February 2013 at Samail Central Prison. Reports suggested that he was placed in solitary confinement due to his perceived role as the instigator of the strike.
