Saif Ali
Saif Ali is a civil society activist from Nasiriyah, Iraq, who has been repeatedly targeted for his outspoken criticism of local authorities and his advocacy for citizens’ rights to quality public services. On 24 November 2024 Ali was detained after posting a video on social media documenting the local government’s removal of an amusement park, a popular recreational space for Nasiriyah residents. He was held without a warrant by the Counter-Terrorism Directorate in Dhi Qar Governorate and was released on bail of 25 Iraqi dinars on 1 December 2024 after seven days in detention. Saif Ali was arrested again on 2 March 2025 and detained for ten days, during which his home was raided and his family intimidated, also without a warrant. He was released again on bail of 25 Iraqi dinars. Earlier, on 10 June 2024, the Nasiriyah Misdemeanour Court sentenced him to a suspended six-month prison term on charges of allegedly sabotaging election campaign materials, a charge linked to his activism against corruption and for better public services.
