Sana Msahli

Sana Msahli is a Tunisian activist, pro-Palestinian campaigner and human rights defender known for her long-standing engagement in political, social and grassroots mobilisation in Tunisia. Also referred to as Sanaa Mahidli Msahli, she holds a Master’s degree in English and has reportedly been active in political and student movements since her school and university years. She became involved in the General Union of Tunisian Students at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities in Sousse as part of the progressive “Nationalist Students” movement and later participated in popular mobilisation linked to the Tunisian Revolution and broader demands for dignity, freedom and social justice. Beyond student activism, Sana Msahli became active in civil society initiatives supporting Palestine and humanitarian solidarity campaigns. She is a member of the Coordination Committee for Joint Action for Palestine and was a founding member of the “Sumud Land Convoy” initiative aimed at challenging the blockade imposed on Gaza. She also served on the steering committee of the Maghreb Sumud Flotilla and participated in the broader Global Sumud Flotilla network organising maritime solidarity missions for Gaza. On 06 March 2026, Tunisian authorities arrested Sana Msahli alongside several other activists linked to the Global Sumud Flotilla initiative, including Wael Naouar, Jawaher Channa, Nabil Chennoufi and Dr. Mohamed Amine Bennour. The arrests were carried out by Tunisia’s counter-terrorism police in Sidi Bou Said amid increasing pressure targeting peaceful Gaza solidarity activities. The arrests followed earlier incidents in which police reportedly blocked activists from accessing port facilities and cancelled public meetings related to the flotilla preparations. Tunisian judicial authorities subsequently opened investigations into alleged financial irregularities connected to fundraising and the management of donations collected for the flotilla initiative, including accusations of money laundering and opaque financial management. Civil society organisations and activists strongly criticised the proceedings, arguing that the case reflected a broader pattern of criminalisation of peaceful solidarity activism and independent civic mobilisation in Tunisia. Following more than one month in detention, Sana Msahli was released on 17 April 2026 after appearing before the Economic and Financial Judicial Pole, while investigations into the case reportedly continued. Human rights defenders and solidarity organisations continued to denounce the prosecutions as politically motivated and aimed at obstructing humanitarian and pro-Palestinian initiatives. As of the latest available information, Sana Msahli has been released but remains subject to ongoing judicial proceedings linked to her involvement in the Steadfastness (Sumud) Flotilla and pro-Palestinian solidarity activities in Tunisia.
