​Shaker Sattar

Shaker Sattar is a Kurdistan journalist working for Tiwar News. On 18 May 2024, Sattar was arrested by security forces at the Ashti checkpoint in the Koya district of Sulaymaniyah Governorate while returning with his family from Sulaymaniyah. He was charged with defamation under Article 226 of the Iraqi Penal Code for allegedly publishing reports that spread fear among citizens. The charges were based on a complaint filed by the Public Prosecutor. Sattar was detained for three days before being released on bail. The Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate condemned his arrest, stating that it was against freedom of the press and media work. They demanded that he be dealt with according to Article 35 of the journalism law and released as soon as possible. Prior to his arrest, Sattar had been involved in investigative reporting on illegal activities of PUK security officials in Sulaymaniyah. His employer, Tiwar News Agency, confirmed that he had received multiple threats before his detention.
