Sherwan Amin Sherwani
Sherwan Amin Sherwani is an Iraqi-Kurdish freelance journalist. He investigates and writes about human rights violations, including rampant corruption in government institutions and social injustice in the Kurdistan region. On 16 February 2021, he and four other journalists were sentenced to six years in prison for their participation in a Facebook group in which they criticised the local government. During their detention, the five journalists were subjected to threats and torture and were forced to sign false confessions. They also suffered from overcrowding in prison cells, ill-treatment, intimidation, and the denial of visits from families or lawyers. Their trial lacked the minimum international standards for fair trial and due process. On 20 July 2023, Sherwani was sentenced to an additional four years in prison on a charge of allegedly “falsifying documents”, after being accused of forging another inmate’s signature for a petition while in prison. Sherwani’s sentence was meant to end in 2022, after having been reduced by a presidential decree, but the new charges have kept him imprisoned.
