Shima Goosheh
Shima Goosheh is an Iranian lawyer and woman human rights defender, she is widely known for her advocacy for women’s rights and for providing legal representation to survivors of sexual violence and women challenging discriminatory laws in Iran. Shima Goosheh has notably supported individuals involved in the Iranian #MeToo movement and has publicly criticised compulsory veiling laws and structural gender discrimination embedded in the Iranian legal framework. Due to her professional activities and outspoken defence of fundamental freedoms, she has faced sustained judicial harassment and intimidation by the authorities. On 16 January 2026, security forces raided Shima Goosheh’s home in Tehran and arrested her amid a broader nationwide crackdown on protests, civil society actors and legal professionals. At the time of arrest, no official charges were publicly disclosed. Subsequent reports indicate that Shima Goosheh has been held in Ward 209 of Evin Prison, a detention facility under the control of the Ministry of Intelligence where detainees are frequently subjected to prolonged interrogation and restricted contact with family and legal counsel. Her arrest occurred in a context marked by widespread repression, including the targeting of at least 19 lawyers since December 2025, severe internet blackouts and systematic efforts to obstruct documentation of human rights violations. As of February 2026, there is no confirmed information indicating her release or the formal presentation of charges, reinforcing concerns that her detention may be arbitrary and directly linked to her legitimate human rights work.
