Talal bin Ahmed Al-Salmani

Talal bin Ahmed Al-Salmani is an Omani internet activist and religious preacher known for his peaceful participation in civic movements. On 08 April 2025, he was arrested by Omani authorities following a peaceful gathering held the previous evening in Muscat, where he delivered a speech in solidarity with the people of Gaza and openly criticized the government. He has been imprisoned in Oman, but there has been no public disclosure of the exact location of his detention. On 10 April 2025, the Court of First Instance in Muscat sentenced him to two years in prison, one year for participating in the gathering and a second year for “broadcasting news and rumours that undermined the prestige of the state”. The court decided to enforce the more severe sentence of a year in prison, which comes with a fine of 500 Omani riyals. The trial was conducted in a summary fashion, depriving Al-Salmani of the opportunity to prepare a defense, and was widely condemned for failing to meet basic international standards of justice. No information has been made public regarding any appeal. The ongoing suppression of freedom of expression and peaceful assembly in Oman is exemplified by his imprisonment.

He was released on 17 April 2025 on bail.
