Walid Al-Tabtabaei
Walid Al‑Tabtabaei is a former member of the Kuwaiti National Assembly, who was arrested on 12 May 2024 after posting on X a message criticising the Emir’s decision to dissolve the National Assembly and suspend parts of the constitution. On 24 June 2024 the Criminal Court sentenced him to four years imprisonment with hard labour for “interfering with the powers vested in His Highness the Amir” and insulting the Emir. The Court of Appeal initially reduced this sentence to two years in September 2024 but on 21 April 2025 the Court of Cassation reinstated the original four‑year term, which was upheld by the Supreme Court, citing the seriousness of his alleged challenge to the Emir’s authority. Walid Al‑Tabtabaei denies authorship of the post, claiming it was fabricated by his adversaries, and his case is emblematic of the broader campaign of repression against former parliamentarians following the May 2024 dissolution of the Assembly.
