Wameedh Shaker
Wameedh Shaker is a Yemeni human rights defender and national gender consultant who has dedicated her work to promoting women’s participation in peacebuilding, human rights, and community development. She is the founder and chairwoman of the Itar Foundation for Social Development, established in 2011 to strengthen civil society and support local initiatives in Yemen through advocacy and capacity building. Over her career, Shaker has worked with international and local organisations including Oxfam, UNICEF, and the Women’s Economic Empowerment Association, focusing on gender equality, protection against violence, and the empowerment of women and children. In April 2024, she addressed the UN Security Council, highlighting the severe humanitarian impact of the conflict in Yemen on women and girls and calling for their active inclusion in peace negotiations. Shaker has consistently stressed that the resolution of conflicts in Yemen requires engaging youth and women in decision-making processes, and her activism reflects a commitment to building a more inclusive and equitable society despite the ongoing challenges of war and repression.
