Wedat Hussein
Wedat Hussein Ali, a journalist from Duhok in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, was employed by the pro‑PKK RojNews agency. On 13 August 2016 he was abducted by unidentified armed men in the Malta district of Duhok and later found dead on the road between Duhok and the village of Semel with clear signs of torture. He was 28 years old at the time. He had previously faced repeated questioning and threats from Asayish security forces, which reportedly demanded he abandon his work or collaborate with them, requests he refused. Additional credible sources corroborate that Ali’s body displayed severe injuries including broken bones, deep lacerations, contusions to the head, torso and limbs, and in some accounts blindness inflicted by torture, aligning with forensic assessments indicating death from sustained beatings rather than gunshots. Investigations conducted by Kurdistan Regional Government authorities didn’t lead to any prosecutions or accountability over subsequent years. His family refused to trust local authorities and appealed to international organisations to oversee an impartial probe into his kidnapping and death. They reported being monitored and harassed by KRG officials in the aftermath. No official resolution or prosecution has been recorded as of today.
