Yacob Al-Khorousy

Yacob Al-Khorousy is an Omani lawyer and prominent human rights defender. He is one of the co-founders of the Omani Group for Human Rights alongside Habibah Al-Hinaee and Ismael Al-Mikbaly. On 31 May 2012, Al-Khorousy was arrested by security forces with his two colleagues while they were on their way to cover a workers strike in the oil production areas of Fohod and Marmul, where workers were protesting against poor conditions and lack of basic services. The three defenders were detained without a warrant and transferred to the General Headquarters of Oman Police in Muscat, where they were held incommunicado without access to their lawyers or families. Al-Khorousy, who had previously been arrested for participating in the 2011 demonstrations in Sohar and had reported on torture in Samail central prison, was known for documenting cases of abuse and defending prisoners of conscience. On 04 June 2012, Al-Khorousy and Al-Hinaee were released under restrictive conditions requiring them to remain in their areas of residence, both charged with “incitement”, a state security offence.
