Yasser Al-Hamdani

Yasser Al-Hamdani is an Iraqi journalist who has been working in his field since 2003. He has been repeatedly targeted by security forces, facing multiple arrests and fines on charges such as “defaming an Iraqi official.” He was imprisoned on 02 October 2023, despite having committed no crime, and was subjected to inhumane conditions such as overcrowded, unsanitary cells and the confiscation of the medication he requires for his chronic illness. His health deteriorated severely during this time. On 07 October 2023, he was released. Al-Hamdani confirmed to GCHR that his targeting was related to him drawing “attention to administrative and financial corruption in a government entity on social media sites and in the television interviews he was conducting with visual media, in addition to his documentation of the violations and attacks committed against journalists in the city of Mosul since 2003.”
