Zulia Ali is a Kurdish correspondent for the Diplomatic Magazine Institution for Digital Media who was arrested on 26 June 2025 by security forces in Sulaymaniyah as she attempted to cover teachers’ protests in the city. Ali was detained along with other journalists from Payam Satellite TV and Speda Satellite TV while reporting on demonstrations but was released within hours. The authorities claimed the arrests were necessary to prevent a plot intended to incite chaos among demonstrators, asserting their actions aimed at protecting demonstrators’ lives. In her reporting Ali covered the long‑standing repression of civil society activists and protesters by Kurdish Regional Government security forces. Ali continues her work in digital journalism in hostile conditions facing arbitrary arrests to hinder press coverage.
