Journalist and activist Asaad Hanna viciously attacked

24/04/2015

On 20 April 2015, journalist and activist Asaad Hanna, who lives in exile in the outskirts of Istanbul, was attacked by an unknown person, who broke into his home during the early morning hours. He attacked Hannah with a sharp object, stabbing him four times. Reports confirm that Hanna sustained some injuries as a result of this attack and was taken to hospital, where he remained for five hours to receive the necessary treatment. He has reported the incident to the Turkish police.

Hanna has received several threats before the attack because of his writings on the current Syrian affairs. This attack is believed to be an explicit threat warning him to stop his peaceful activities as a journalist and civil activist.

The Gulf Centre for Human Rights (GCHR) calls on the Turkish government to carry out an immediate, impartial and thorough investigation into the attack on Asaad Hannah with a view to publishing the results and bringing those responsible to justice in line with local laws and international standards. The GCHR also appeals to the relevant international organizations to provide the necessary protection for him to continue his work.
