Abdulaziz Al-Shubaili is a Saudi human rights defender and co-founder of the Saudi Civil and Political Rights Association. On 29 May 2016, the Specialised Criminal Court in Riyadh sentenced Abdulaziz Al-Shubaili to eight years in prison, followed by an eight-year travel ban and an eight-year ban on using social media upon his release. The charges against Abdulaziz Al-Shubaili included “participating in an unlicensed association,” “communicating with foreign organisations,” and “preparing, storing, and sending data affecting public order.” On 14 August 2017, the Court of Appeal upheld the full preliminary sentence issued against Abdulaziz Al-Shubaili. He was arrested on 17 September 2017 and has been detained since then.
