Ali Qandil Sarsour
Ali Qandil Sarsour is a Jordanian Internet activist who has used social media to express his views on public affairs, including issues related to education and teachers’ rights. On 2 April 2020, the Amman Magistrate’s Penal Court rejected, for the fifth time in a row, his request to replace a three-month prison sentence with a fine. He was charged under Jordan’s Cyber Crime Law in connection with posts he published on social media that authorities considered defamatory of an official body. His case forms part of a broader pattern of prosecutions targeting educators, civil society activists, and supporters of the Jordan Teachers’ Syndicate (JTS) for peacefully expressing their opinions online.
