Anwar Al-Fikr
Anwar Al-Fikr is a former elected parliamentarian in Kuwait who was targeted following his participation in a campaign event during which he allegedly made statements considered “against the authority of the Emir”. On 18 May 2024, Anwar Al-Fikr was summoned by the Public Prosecution Office and placed in pre-trial detention for a period of 21 days. He was released on 28 May 2024 but later sentenced on 29 July 2024 to three years in prison based on these charges, which remain vague and broadly formulated. On 9 September 2024, he was released on bail pending the outcome of his appeal, though he continues to be subjected to a travel ban. The legal action against Anwar Al-Fikr is part of a broader campaign of repression targeting former parliamentarians and critics following the dissolution of the Kuwaiti National Assembly in May 2024. Other politicians such as Hamad Al-Olayan and Mesaed Al-Quariafa have faced similar prosecutions in what appears to be an orchestrated effort to silence dissenting voices in the country’s political sphere.
