Dr. Mohammed Ali Naim

Dr. Mohammed Ali Naim was a Yemeni academic, university professor and human rights defender who served as Director of the Engineering Consulting Centre and was a professor in the Architectural Department at the College of Engineering at Sana’a University, having also previously been Dean of the College of Engineering at Amran University, and used his Facebook platform to speak out against corruption and advocate for civil and human rights including economic accountability and improved public sector conditions. On 04 August 2021 at approximately 21:30, Dr. Naim was assassinated by unidentified gunmen as he was leaving the house of a friend in Sana’a, where he was shot multiple times and died at the scene, hours after publishing posts on social media calling on authorities in both Sana’a and Aden to increase salaries to reflect the cost of living and earlier reposting calls for accountability for alleged corruption, actions consistent with his exercise of peaceful expression and human rights advocacy. Reports indicate that one of the alleged assailants was arrested shortly after the shooting and initially confessed to the killing motivated by “personal disputes” with Dr. Naim on Facebook, though during a 22 August hearing before the Public Prosecution in Sana’a the accused denied that confession and the investigation remains ongoing, with the possibility of multiple gunmen not ruled out, and no definitive determination of responsibility publicly confirmed. As of the latest credible information available, no confirmed judicial proceedings, trial or final verdict have been reported in relation to the assassination of Naim, and the investigation remains unresolved with no transparent indication of meaningful progress by the authorities.
