Fareah Al-Saqqaf
Fareah Al-Saqqaf is a Kuwaiti human rights defender, writer and civil society leader known for her longstanding engagement in volunteer work and youth empowerment initiatives. Al-Saqqaf is the daughter of the prominent Kuwaiti poet Ahmed Al-Saqqaf, who passed away in 2010, and has built a distinguished career marked by her involvement in charitable and civic activities. She has been an active member of the Kuwait Red Crescent Society and is also a member of the Women’s Cultural and Social Society, an organisation dedicated to advancing women’s rights and participation in public life. In 2002, Fareah Al-Saqqaf co-founded the organisation LOYAC with a group of women, which focuses on empowering young people through programmes supporting their personal and professional development, and she currently serves as its Chairperson and Managing Director. In addition to her civil society work, Fareah Al-Saqqaf is a columnist for various newspapers in Kuwait and abroad, and she uses her X account to express her personal opinions on public affairs in Kuwait and the wider Arab region. On the morning of 03 March 2026, Fareah Al-Saqqaf was arbitrarily arrested by the State Security Apparatus alongside fellow activist Suad Al-Munayes for peacefully and respectfully exercising her constitutional right to freedom of expression on social media. Her arrest forms part of a broader pattern of repression targeting individuals for expressing dissenting views online. While reliable reports have confirmed the detention conditions of Suad Al-Munayes following the arrest, there is no confirmed information regarding the whereabouts of Fareah Al-Saqqaf after she was taken into custody, raising serious concerns about possible enforced disappearance and violations of due process guarantees.
