Khaled Al-Omair is a Saudi human rights activist and reform advocate from Riyadh. He was first imprisoned in 2009 after taking part in a peaceful protest. During that detention, he repeatedly went on hunger strike and later filed a torture complaint after his release. In June 2018, he was re-arrested by State Security following a formal complaint he had lodged with the Royal Court against an officer allegedly responsible for his prior torture. In April 2021, the Specialized Criminal Court sentenced him to 7 years in prison on charges including launching a Twitter campaign calling for “a new constitution” and “incitement against leadership”. In August that year, an appeal court raised his sentence to 9 years, along with a 9 years travel ban. While detained in al-Ha’ir Prison, he has been subject to ill-treatment, as in 2021 he was physically assaulted by another inmate and the authorities did not take action. In late 2019, he declared a hunger strike, protesting his prolonged detention without charge, the legitimacy of the counter-terrorism law under which he was prosecuted, and demanding his unconditional release. He later suspended the strike after judicial proceedings began. As of  2025, he remains in arbitrary detention, human rights organisations call for his immediate release and an independent investigation into the abuses he has suffered.
