Layla Hadidoun
Layla Hadidoun is a Jordanian teacher and civil society activist who became a prominent voice in defending the rights of educators and supporting the Jordan Teachers’ Syndicate (JTS). On 2 April 2020, the Amman Magistrate’s Penal Court rejected for the fifth time her request to replace a three-month prison sentence with a fine. She had been convicted under Jordan’s Cyber Crime Law for posts published on Facebook, including one in which she described the combination of remote and classroom learning as “hybrid.” This was deemed defamation of an official body after the Ministry of Education filed a lawsuit against her, reportedly because she criticized the former Minister of Education. Despite facing imprisonment, Hadidoun has continued to affirm her solidarity with the JTS and her fellow teachers.
