Mahsa Amini was a 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish citizen who died as a result of police brutality in custody on 16 September 2022. While visiting her family in Tehran on 13 September 2022, Amini was arrested by the morality police for wearing an “improper hijab” and transferred by a police van to Vozara detention centre in Tehran. According to local news reports, she was taken to the hospital in a coma approximately two hours after her detention, after having been severely beaten. Her death sparked widespread protests across Iran in support of women’s rights and political reform, and against police brutality and corruption.
