Manahel Al-Otaibi

Manahel Al-Otaibi is a fitness instructor and feminist currently detained in Saudi Arabia. Al-Otaibi was arrested on 16 November 2022, then forcibly disappeared on 05 November 2023, and has been imprisoned since. On 09 January 2024, she was sentenced to 11 years in prison in a secret hearing before the Specialised Criminal Court (SCC). She was sentenced for her peaceful promotion of women’s rights, wearing “indecent” clothes, and tweeting using feminist hashtags. While imprisoned, she has been held in solitary confinement, faced physical abuse severe enough to result in a broken leg, and been denied proper medical care. Several civil society organisations, including the Gulf Centre for Human Rights (GCHR) and AL-QST, signed joint letters calling for her immediate and unconditional release, in addition to greater transparency in Saudi prisons as a whole.

At a hearing on 21 August 2025, the SCC overturned Al-Otaibi’s 11-year jail term but handed down a new five-year sentence (followed by a five-year travel ban). With time served, she will not be freed until 2027.
