Mesaed Al-Quraifa

Mesaed Al-Quraifa is a former National Assembly candidate currently imprisoned in Kuwait for comments he made in criticism of Kuwait’s royal family and in defence of human rights. On 30 March 2024, he held a local election symposium titled “What Must Be Said.” At the symposium, he made comments such as “Kuwait is not a testing ground for members of the ruling family.” He also defended the civil and human rights of citizens in Kuwait. In response to this, he was arrested on 23 April 2024. He has since been sentenced to four years of imprisonment with hard labour under the charges of “insulting the authority of the emirate.”

On 20 April 2025, the Court of Appel in Kuwait finally issued its decision in the case of seven former MPs and candidates, and ordered the imprisonment of Mesaed Al-Quraifah for four years. The court considered the case as a national security case and charged him with insulting and interfering with the authorities and rights of the Emir. The court also sentenced Mesaed Al-Quraifah on charges of insulting the Emir, offending the Minister of Interior, and abusing the use of his phone.
