Mohammed Ftouni
Mohammed Ftouni is a Lebanese cameraman and freelance photojournalist who was killed on 28 March 2026 in an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon while covering ongoing hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in a context of escalating violence and increasing risks faced by journalists operating in frontline areas. Ftouni was engaged in field production and visual documentation of the conflict, working alongside journalists to capture footage of military developments and their impact on civilian populations in southern Lebanon. On 28 March 2026, while travelling in a clearly identifiable media vehicle on the Jezzine highway with journalist Ali Shoeib and reporter Fatima Ftouni, Mohammed Ftouni was killed when an Israeli strike directly targeted their car, resulting in the deaths of all three media workers. Reports indicate that the vehicle was marked as press and that the team was actively carrying out journalistic coverage at the time of the attack, raising serious concerns regarding the protection of journalists under international humanitarian law. The Israeli military stated that the strike was intended to target Ali Shoeib, alleging that he was acting as a Hezbollah intelligence operative, a claim that has not been independently verified and has been questioned by press freedom organisations. The killing of Mohammed Ftouni prompted condemnation from international organisations including the Committee to Protect Journalists, which emphasised that journalists must be treated as civilians and protected from attack while performing their professional duties.
