Nassima Al-Sadah

Nassima Al-Sadah is a prominent Saudi Arabian human rights defender and educator from Qatif, known for her advocacy against gender and religious discrimination. In 2011, she filed a lawsuit demanding that women be allowed to vote and stand as candidates in municipal elections, and in 2015, she attempted to run for office but was barred by authorities. Nassima Al-Sadah was actively involved in the campaign to end the ban on women driving and co-founded the Adala Centre for Human Rights. On 30 July 2018, she was arrested and detained at Al-Mabaheth prison in Dammam, where she was held in solitary confinement for nearly a year without access to legal representation. In November 2020, she was sentenced to five years and eight months in prison, with two years suspended, and a five-year travel ban, on charges related to her peaceful activism. Al-Sadah was conditionally released on 27 June 2021 upon the expiry of her sentence but remains under a travel ban and faces restrictions on her freedom of expression and employment opportunities.
